I regularly am sent questions from readers asking me if bad breath detectors really work. Many ask what I think of them.

Maybe you are not aware of what a bad breath detector does — or even what it is.

The most common bad breath detectors are designed as hand held devices designed for you to breathe into so that they can evaluate your breath odor. Generally there is an LED light that will illuminate if you are having a problem.

While it depends on your model — you will, typically, get distinct colored lights that represent different levels of odor on the breath. It is common for a red light indicates BAD – a green light signals GOOD, and there could easily even be yellow and orange lights representing borderline levels of breath odor.

What’s the secret to how they work?  I’m afraid I just have no idea.  But how many people really care about how they work, as long as they do.

What can you expect to spend on one?  Typically something like $20.  Some may run as high as $50 or $60, but by and large those may also be used to measure the alcohol level on the breath.

Are they a sound investment?

That is entirely up to you. If you think $20 is a small price to pay, and you are comfortable with it – grab one.  Why not?

Alternatively, you can check your own breath for free by breathing onto the back of one of your hands and checking the scent by sniffing in.  You might also try licking your wrist lightly and then sniffing there.

You should know if your breath needs attention after taking these two tests. The first one is for general bad breath, the second test is designed to pinpoint bad breath caused by saliva, which is not as common.

More essential, at least I think, is to stop and ask what you are doing to prevent bad breath?

People are not generally aware of it, most mass producted commercial mouthwashes have a high alcohol content, which is bad!

Why? Becaue alchol dries the mouth, and a dry mouth is a common bad breath trigger.

For anybody who is troubled over sour breath odor, you know it is a real problem for your social life. You are probably ready to do anything to be done with the problem.

Here are the facts: When you are seriously looking into the problem, you will stumble on several causes of halitosis.

The most frequent cause of halitosis  is too much bacteria inside your mouth and on the tongue.

Where does the bacteria originate?

In general it begins with pieces of food, plaque on the teeth, or diseased gums.

What’s more, there are particular foods that recurrently cause halitosis.

These are generally understood by most people.

Individual behavioral routines may also be the principal cause of halitosis.

A a low carb diet is frequently associated with bad breath.

The bacteria that causes bad breath is stimulated by protein.  Foods rich in protein (such as fish) are frequently bad breath triggers.

Onions and garlic contain volatile sugary compounds and consuming them is a frequent source of foul breath. Also, these volatile sugar compounds can enter the bloodstream and lungs which may further compound the matter (whoops — no pun intended!)

When you think of smoking, do you associate it with bad breath? I believe the majority feel that way.

Think of what it would be like not having to worry about your breath! Picture never feeling the need to back off from people, not covering your mouth as you talk, and not being embarrassed to kiss those you love!

The good news is that most people can be cured of sour breath using easy home remedies that eliminate the most common bad breath causes.

People are not generally aware of it, but commercial mouthwashes are one of the worse things you can use for your breath because they have high alcohol content.

Here’s the scoop:

Hydrogen Peroxide (H202) is not sold to the public in its purest form.  In fact, the brown bottles you pick up at the drug store are actually only 3% hydrogen peroxide – the rest is water. The reason it is stored in brown bottles is because it will break down rapidly if it is exposed to bright light.

While it is true that what you are buying is watered down, the commercial 3% solution is adequate for its anti-bacterial qualities.

Many doctors and dentists prescribe it as a mouthwash for a variety of ailments. What kind?  Hydrogen peroxide is a common treatment for trench mouth, canker sores, mouth sores, mouth abrasions and infections.

Just to keep everything equal, however, some studies show that extended use (holding it in the mouth for long periods of time) may soften tooth surfaces.  So if you make this practice a habit   in order to whiten your teeth – check with your dentist. He or she may seriously advise against it!

How do you make hydrogen peroxide mouthwash?

Pour out a couple of ounces into a glass, and mix with an equal amount of water.  You can then gargle it and swish it in your mouth for a minute or two. Be certain that you do not swallow.  If you have any questions, just follow the label directions.

That’s it.

You now have a safe and effective mouthwash that will, it has been shown, aid in controlling bad breath in many people – but not everyone!

Why does it work for some and not others?   As I found out while researching The Bad Breath Treatment Guide, bad breath is caused by a variety of different things.

When foul breath is caused by germs or bacteria in the mouth – which is the most common cause – then hydrogen peroxide, with its antibacterial, oxygenating qualities, is an excellent natural remedy.

On the other hand, if your bad breath is caused by digestive problems, or other more serious medical problems, then hydrogen peroxide mouthwash, while refreshing, will probably not eliminate your problem.

Keep in mind, that some serious medical problems like kidney disease, liver disease, HIV, problem insulin levels, and others, can cause bad breath.  It would be a good idea to discuss the problem next time you see your doctor.

Actually, there are a couple of methods that seem to work for many people.

One way is to breathe on the back of one of your hands. As you do this, you can sniff to check if you detect the smell of odor as it comes out of your mouth.

I also learned while doing the research for The Bad Breath Treatment Guide that breath odor may be caused by saliva.  Because saliva can cause a bad odor, slightly lick your wrist or the back of your hand. Give it a few seconds and then take a whiff. If you don’t smell anything, then you are probably OK.

On the other hand, if you detect a bad odor, check with your dentist and get help.

Here is one more trick that has worked for many as a bad breath test:  Use a spoon to scrape your tongue. Scrape separately both the front and the back.  Then smell the spoon.

By the way, when you look in a mirror (when you are alone) take a moment to look inside your mouth.  Do you have any black spots on your teeth? If you do, this may be a sign that you may have bad breath.
